Supersize Me

Alsea McLaughlin

Film Appreciation

The documentary that I choose to review this week was Supersize me. It is about a man named Morgan Spurlock who for thirty days eats nothing but McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He is doing the experiment to see what role the fast food industry has in the rise in obesity in the United States. At the beginning of the experiment he was really healthy and did not have any health problems besides the fact that he used to smoke. While the experiment continued he started to show signs of weight gain, loss of energy, and loss of a sex drive. By the end of the experiment Morgan had gained so much weight that all the doctors and specialists advised him that if he did not stop eating McDonalds than it could cause him to have serious health problems.

For the most part I enjoyed the documentary. It made me think about how much I go out to fast food restaurants and if I should consider those types of restaurants less. At some points I thought that Morgan was annoying but I got past that. I would like to see someone do that experiment today and the differences between 2019 and 2004 when the documentary was shot. McDonalds does not even offer the supersize option anymore, so we could see how all fast food restaurants have changed their menus and if they have healthier options. We could also look at if Americans can gained or lost weight.

One thing that I wish that they did cover in the movie was other reasons besides fast food restaurants that cause people to become obese. For some people eating is a way to deal with anxiety and being depressed. For some people eating is the only thing that will bring them happiness. In the film they touched on that a little bit. During the experiment Morgan got really depressed, but when he ate McDonald’s it put him in a good mood. For other people they have a disability or disease that causes them to gain weight as a result. Conditions like hypothyroidism, insomnia, and cushings disease can cause people to put on weight. Some medical treatments can also cause people to gain more weight.

The Film did a good at showing the affects of eating out to much and what it can do to a persons body. It just could talked more about other reasons to why people are overweight. Fast food restaurants are not the only reason that people are obese.

Pulp Fiction

The film that I choose to review this week was Pulp Fiction written and directed by Quentin Tarintino and produced by Lawrence Bender. It tells three different stories about three different people whose stories intertwine with each other. The first story is about a mob contract killer Vincent Vega. The second story is about a fighter Butch Coolidge. The third story is about Vincent’s partner Jules Winnfield. The cast includes John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, and Christopher Walken.

Vincent’s storyline is about him going on a date with his boss’s wife while his boss is out of town. I found this part interesting because I would not have expected that a good portion of the film would be just focused on two people going on a date. The relationship between the two was enjoyable to watch because they almost immediately like each other and they quickly became comfortable with each other. When they are in the dinner Mia makes a comment about how hard it is to find someone that you can be comfortable sitting in silence with. I really liked that quote because I find it hard to be with someone without talking without it being awkward. Later when Vincent is driving her home after she overdoses, they sit in the car without talking and it shows how close they had gotten in just that short amount of time.

Butch’s storyline is about how he accidentaly killed someone while in a fight and now he is trying to run away from the mob boss, Marsellus. He and Marsellus are then kidnapped by two men who try to rape them but are then killed by Butch and Marsellus. Of all three parts this was my least favorite one. When the storyline started I was just really confused about what was going on and why he had to go on the run. The parts that were Butch and his girlfriend spending time in their hotel room I found boring because there was nothing really happening. When Butch and Marsellus were kidnapped that part what interesting but I was mostly just creeped out which is probably how I was supposed to be feeling during that scene.

Jule’s storyline is about how he and Vincent steal a briefcase for their boss and accidentally kill someone in their car, and then are held up at a restaurant. I found this part to be my favorite because of how funny it was. The scene where they guy is shot inside the car was very entertaining to watch, and the dynamic between the four men was very funny. It was also entertaining to watch Jules trying to figure out what he wants to do next his life. I enjoyed how Jules storyline went back to how the movie started at the beginning at the restaurant.

Gold Diggers of 1933

The musical I decided to review this week is Gold Diggers of 1933 Directed by Mervyn LeRoy and based on the 1919 play written by Avery Hopwood. It is about a group of women during the great depression who are trying to earn money and are trying to find jobs in musicals. The group is also trying to get two young lovers, Brad and Polly, to stay together despite the fact that Brad’s brother is trying to keep them apart. The cast includes Joan Blondell, Warren William, Aline MacMahon, and Ruby Keeler.
One of the things that I enjoyed most about the movie was how different it was than every other movie I have seen made around that time. It was made before the Hays Code was enforced which put a huge amount on what can and can not be put in movies and lasted throughout the 1930s and till the 1960s. The code made it so that drugs, sex, drinking, revenge themes, crimes, violence, and many others could not be shown almost at all in any film. A clear sign that the movie was made before the code was all the drinking, drugs, and sex jokes that were in the movie, but that was an entire musical number about people petting each other in a park.
The movie also showed what almost no other movies were showing at the time and that was a depiction of the Great Depression. While other movies at the time were made to make people forget about what was going on in their lives while Gold Diggers of 1933 gave the audience something that they could relate to and maybe even inspire them. It showed the audience that even that it was bad at the time it can always get better, and that if they try a different approach to a problem they might get the result that they are wanting.
A great part of the film was how empowering it was to women especially at that time in history. The movie features four different and interesting female leads. It showed women during whatever they could to make money and needing to depend on a man to get it. When Brad’s brother made those remarks about showgirls to Carol she showed him that not every showgirl is like that. Even though the women in this film are showgirls they are not oversexualized like they are in many other films.

Moonrise Kingdom

The movie I choose was Moonrise Kingdom directed by Wes Anderson. It is about the town New Penzance and a storm that is about to hit the island. The movie follows two children, Sam and Suzy, who run away to the woods and fall and love. They try to find a way to be together despite their family and friends and throughout the movie they change each other for the better. The cast includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton.

The most interesting part of the movie for me was the relationship between Sam and Suzy and how it develops throughout the film.  At the beginning of the movie Suzy is somewhat of a loner who is distant from her family and feels ignored by them and that they think of her as more of a problem than a daughter. While in her house she is wearing bright colors while the rest of her family is in neutral colors to help show her being an outsider. Sam also feels like a loner from being an orphan and thinking that nobody likes him in his troop. When the two first meet and start exchanging letters they start to bond over how similar they feel. These leads them to devise a plan to run away to the woods together and away from their problems.

In the woods Sam is in his element from being an excellent scout. Suzy however is very much out of her element and the film expresses that from what choose to have her wear. Throughout their time Suzy is wearing a bright pink dress which contrasts from all the neutral shades from the woods and the uniform Sam is wearing. It shows how Suzy is usually different and apart from everyone else in her life. Suzy is also carrying around her cat trapped in a basket and this is to symbolize how she feels trapped in her own life. When Suzy and Sam go down to the lake and jump it Suzy changes out her wet clothes into her underwear. This is the first time Suzy is shown wear more neutral colors and it shows that she is feeling less of an outsider and getting closer to Sam.

After the two leave the forest the clothes Suzy wears afterward are more toned down and less aggressive colors. When Suzy and Sam have their wedding Suzy is still wearing pink but is a lot less bright and has shades of red in it. At the end of the movie was she then seen wearing when she is seen sitting with Sam. The film used all these different colors to show how Suzy was feeling was feeling throughout the film.

Children of Men

The film I decided to cover this week is Children Of Men directed by Alfonso Cuaron. It is about a post apocalyptic world where everyone has become infirtle and no more babies are being born. The main character, Theo meets up with his ex-wife Julian to help a young woman named Kee to safety. Kee is pregnant with the first baby in over 18 years. The cast includes Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Claire-Hope Ashitey, and Michael Caine.

What I enjoyed most about the movie was the character development that the main character Theo went on. At the beginning of the movie he seems to be just a sad man who does not care about life and is questioning whether or not to even keep on living. When Julian shows up to ask for his help he is only in it for the money and does not really care about helping anyone. When Julian gets shot that is the first time we really see him express any emotions about what is going on.

Later on when he finds out that Kee is pregnant he is shocked but he still did not seem that interested in helping her. When the group is deciding what to do with Kee and the baby Theo suggests that they just bring her to some doctors which seemed like he was just trying to push the problem to the next person and not make it his problem anymore. It is not until Theo overhears the other group members talking about how they were going to take the baby away from Kee once it was born to stop the uprising that he really seemed to care about what happened to her and wanted her to be safe. He knew that this was something that Julian really cared about and that she was willing to die to make it happen.

As they continue to travel Theo began to grow more closer to Kee and her nurse, Miriam. So when the government took Miriam away when she was trying to keep Kee safe he seem devastated that she was going to get hurt. Once the baby was finally born Theo was willing to do anything to make sure that the baby was safe. He was running through the streets barefoot, he was getting shot at, and eventually he does really get shot. This leads to his death at the end of the movie that resulted from trying to keep Kee and the baby safe. It was such a contrast from when we are first introduced to him at the beginning when he did not really care about anything, and then by the end of the movie he cares so much that he was willing to die for them.

Jurassic Park

The movie I choose to review this week was Jurassic Park directed by Steven Spielberg. It is about John Hammond, a man who is trying to create a theme park that features real life dinosaurs that is called Jurassic Park. He recruits a team of a paleontologist, Dr. Alan Grant, a paleobotanist, Dr. Ellie Sattler, and a mathematician, Ian Malcom, to come to the island to decide if the theme park is safe enough to open to the public. While taking a tour of the island the dinosaurs escape and start to attack the team along with John Hammond’s grandchildren. Eventually almost everyone escapes the island safely aside of a few characters that were killed by the dinosaurs. The cast includes Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough.
Jurassic Park is probably one of the biggest movie series of all time. No matter the age almost everyone has seen one of the Jurassic Park and it has a monumental effect on people even today. It had brought to screen the most realistic dinosaurs that people had sen before despite the fact that some of the dinosaurs in the film are not accurate to what they looked like when they were alive. When Tyrannosaurus Rexes were alive they actually had feathers on them but today everyone thinks that they have scales and were more reptile like because Jurassic Park has influenced people so much. It was one of the very first movies in history to use computer generated imagery or CGI. Nowadays when people see any monster or creature in a movie it is usually created by CGI. If you go to the next new Marvel movie the villain or superheroes could be made up of entirely CGI. For example a fight between Hulk and Thanos would be made of the most part all CGI. However CGI was not the only effect used in Jurassic Park. Jurassic Park used dinosaur animatronics, a life size inanimate objects that resembles a real life object, in the film as the T-rex in some scenes. Even though the more came out more than 20 years ago the effects still live up and is sometimes better than the effects that are used today. It did not rely entirely on CGI that films do today.
I had never seen any of the Jurassic Parks before but I had always heard about how great the movies are and how I should watch them. I think that it lives up to the hype that it gets. There was a lot of action and adventure that kept me wanting to keep watching it. The character played by Jeff Goldblum was my favorite character in the movie because he added some comedy to the movie. The children in the movie started to get annoying to me because they were always needing to be saved and were usually just making the situation worse. I am definitely interested in watching the sequels to Jurassic Park and the new Jurassic World series. Hopefully with the Jurassic World they make the dinosaurs more accurate to when they were alive To anyone who has not seen the movies before I would recommend watching them.

Memento

The movie that I chose to review this week was Memento which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan. It is about a man named Leonard, played by Guy Pearce, who has a short-term memory problem and is trying to figure out who murdered his wife. I am always watching those top ten videos on youtube and Memento is always on the lists that are about the best plot twists in movies. So before I had even watched the movie I had already known about the twist ending of how Leonard may have been responsible for his wife’s death. Having known how the movie was going to end I think made me like the movie less than if I had not known. I spent the whole movie knowing that Leonard may have been the person that killed his wife, so I did not get to really experience the twist ending.

I enjoyed the editing of the film even though it was confusing at times. The film moving backwards made it had to tell what was going on at some points. It also took me a while to realize that different where to show different periods in time. Once I knew that the scenes that were going backwards in color and the scenes going forward in black and white made it easier to be able to tell what was going on. The way that it was edited the film so that the next scene ended when the last one began made it a lot easier to tell where in time they were. When I found out that the movie would be going forward and backward in time and then meet in the middle I thought I would not like that aspect of the film. A couple years ago I watched the movie movie musical The Last Five Years and it had that kind of editing and it made me not like the movie, but in Memento I enjoyed. There was a scene in the movie where when Sammy was at the hospital there was quick shot of Leonard instead of Sam which somewhat reveals that Leonard was Sammy the whole time. That was one of my favorite moments in the film, because I thought it was a clever way to let the audience that there may be something else going on besides Leonard trying to find his wife’s killer. Another piece of editing that they did was when the time times meet I did not notice that it had changed from black and white to color.

Overall I thought the movie was really good and would  recommend that people watch it whether they have seen it or not. They can either experience it for the first time or be able to notice details that they did not see the first time. I would definitely see Memento a second time to try and catch anything I missed.
